Why is dichloromethane used as a solvent?

2025,10,22
DCM dichloromethane (also called methylene chloride), this colorless, volatile liquid with a chloroform-like, sweet odor is widely used as a solvent. Although it is not miscible with water, it is slightly polar and miscible with many organic solvents. Dichloromethane solvent is used in industrial and research applications.

Why is dichloromethane used as a solvent?

  1. Balanced Polarity: DCM Dichloromethane is a moderately polar aprotic solvent. This balance makes it more versatile than highly polar solvents (e.g., water) or nonpolar solvents (e.g., hexane).
  2. Low Boiling Point: With a boiling point of ~39.6°C, DCM evaporates quickly at room temperature.
  3. Immiscibility with Water: DCM Dichloromethane liquid is only slightly soluble in water, forming distinct layers when mixed.
  4. Low Viscosity: Its low viscosity ensures it spreads easily and penetrates materials (e.g., paint layers).
