As a medium-evaporating solvent, it is used to dissolve many synthetic resins, including cellulosics, vinyl copolymers, acrylics, alkyds, polyesters and epoxies. It is also used in a wide variety of applications, including the manufacture of germicides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals and electroplating solutions, as well as in many ethanol formulations as a denaturant.
