Dichloroethane Chemical is a colorless transparent liquid with the chemical formula  C2H4Cl2. It is miscible with various organic solvents, including ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, chloroform, acetone, etc. Soluble in approximately 120 parts water. Flammable; vapors may form explosive mixtures and may cause explosions and release toxic gases. Ignites readily upon contact with open flames or high heat, potentially leading to explosions. Reacts with oxidizing agents.

Applications

Production of Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM): This is its dominant use (over 90%). Ethylene dichloride EDC is cracked at high temperatures to produce Vinyl Chloride, which is then polymerized to make Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), a ubiquitous plastic.
 
Chemical Intermediate: Dichloroethane Chemical is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other chemicals, such as ethylenediamine (for EDTA), and various solvents.
 
Solvent: Its use as a solvent has declined significantly due to its toxicity. It was formerly used for degreasing, metal cleaning, and in textile and adhesive formulations.
