Tetrahydrofuran THF ( CAS 109-99-9) is a type of heterocyclic organic compound. It is one of the strongest polar ethers and is used as a moderately polar solvent in chemical reactions and extractions. THF C4H8O is a colourless, clear liquid with an ether-like odour. Its properties include a relative density of 0.89, a molecular weight of 72.11, a melting point of -108.5 °C, a boiling point of 66 °C, a flash point of -17.2 °C and a self-ignition point of 321.1 °C. Its refractive index is 1.407.

Applications

Tetrahydrofuran Solvent is used as a solvent and a raw material for organic synthesis.

It is also used as a reagent for chromatographic analysis, an organic solvent and a nylon intermediate.

It is also known as oxoalkanes and tetramethylene oxide. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of the pesticide phenylbutyltin. In addition, industrial grade Tetrahydrofuran can be used directly to manufacture synthetic fibres, resins and rubbers. It is also used in the production of polymer materials, precision tapes and solvents in the electroplating industry.
